Nelson was born in Saguache, Colorado in 1882. As a youth, he traveled to Pueblo entering an apprenticeship under Tom Flynn in the art of saddle making. Nelson worked in Canon City briefly before opening a saddle shop in Eaton, Colo in 1900, and later in Trinidad with Greg Burkhard. Nelson left Trinidad in the fall of 1905 for Grand Junction eventually opening his own business in 1916. In 1920 Nelson moved his shop to 122 S 5th Street taking in H R Post for the partnership of Nelson and Post.
