His shop located at 737 State Street remained in operation until approximately 1897, when his ad last appeared in the directory. The State Street location was on the same block as legendary saddler Sherman Loomis and the less prominent, J.J. Eddleman. During his relatively brief stay in Santa Barbara, Forbes had one of the larger saddle shops in the city, employing some of the better-known local saddle makers, including Francisco and Jacob (JA) Moreno and Herbert Tomlinson. Tomlinson and his brother George bought the S Loomis shop in 1898 from Sherman Loomis’ heirs and operated it until 1920.
