Jose Maria Tapia (1820-1904) was born in Mexico emigrating to California in the 1850s where his name first surfaces in the US Federal census in 1860. That same year, records indicate that a 40-year old Jose was working as a blacksmith and living in the same dwelling as Pio Pico, then governor of Alta, California Territory -- a clear indication and validation of his advanced blacksmithing skills. Pico was one of the richest men in Alta California. Jose became a naturalized US citizen on September 5th, 1871 in the Los Angeles County Court.
