Tom was born in 1875 in Arkansas, learning spur making from his father in Coleman, Texas. He worked for McChesney, then for PM Kelly in Dalhart, Texas (c.1911) before opening his own shop which he operated there until his death in 1915. According to Kelly, "Tom Johnson was one of the best and fastest hand-workmen ever". He purportedly didn’t use machines preferring traditional hand work. While J.R. McChesney is often credited with inventing or popularizing certain Texas-style spurs like gal‑legs, some historians credit Tom Johnson (or R.L.
