Born in Northern California in 1889, by age 16 Raphael (Filo) was working as a bit and spur maker in Sacramento, Cal with Bernard Valenzuela. He later joined G S Garcia in Elko, NV in 1911 and is credited with the production of some of Garcia's finest work. In 1917 Gutierrez teamed up with Bill Phillips in Cheyenne, Wyoming for the short-lived but legendary partnership of Phillips and Gutierrez. Returning to Northern California in 1920, he joined Juan Estrada, and later worked from his San Francisco home at 1084 Le Conte Avenue until his death in 1958. Gutierrez made bits and spurs for Hamley, Olsen-Nolte, Fred Stern and G S Garcia in addition to his own maker-mark.
